Monsoon Honeymoon in Kerala: Why June to August Is Underrated
Is the monsoon a good time for a Kerala honeymoon? Lower prices, lush scenery, Ayurveda and where to go from June to August.
Most couples assume the monsoon is the wrong time to visit Kerala. We think it is one of the most underrated times for a honeymoon. From June to August, Kerala turns a deep, glowing green, waterfalls are at their fullest, the air is cool, and resorts are quiet and much more affordable. If you don’t mind some rain, a monsoon honeymoon can feel more romantic, more private and better value than the winter peak.
What is the monsoon in Kerala like?
The southwest monsoon usually reaches Kerala around the end of May or early June and continues through August, with lighter rain in September. A second, milder northeast monsoon brings showers in October and November.
- Rain pattern: heavy showers and downpours, often with dry spells in between. It rarely rains all day, every day.
- Temperature: cooler than summer, with daytime highs around the high 20s °C on the coast and cooler still in the hills.
- Landscape: every hill, paddy field and plantation is bright green; waterfalls like Athirappilly are at their most dramatic.
Why a monsoon honeymoon is worth considering
- Lower prices: this is Kerala’s off-season, and many resorts offer their lowest rates of the year. The same budget can get you a pool villa or a luxury lake resort.
- Privacy: fewer tourists means quieter resorts, empty viewpoints and more attentive service.
- Cosy romance: rain on the roof, hot tea, a warm room and misty views. Many couples find it the most romantic weather of all.
- Ayurveda season: the monsoon, especially the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (July to August), is traditionally considered the best time for Ayurvedic treatments.
- The Nehru Trophy Boat Race: held on Punnamada Lake in Alleppey, traditionally on the second Saturday of August, with dozens of giant snake boats racing. A spectacular day out.
Where to go during the monsoon
Munnar
Green, misty and cool, with waterfalls everywhere. Some viewpoints may be hidden in cloud, but the atmosphere is magical. Choose a resort with a good view and a cosy room.
Kumarakom and Alleppey
The backwaters are full and lush. Houseboats operate through most of the monsoon, and rain on the lake is beautiful to watch from a glass-covered houseboat. During heavy rain alerts, authorities may restrict cruising for safety, and we will adjust your plan if needed.
Athirappilly and Vazhachal
Kerala’s biggest waterfall is at its peak in the monsoon. It is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Kochi, and an easy addition to the start or end of your trip.
Ayurveda resorts
A few days at a resort with an Ayurveda centre, with couple massages, steam and healthy food, is a lovely way to spend a monsoon honeymoon.
Where to avoid or limit
- Beaches: the sea is rough and swimming is unsafe. Beach resorts are still lovely for the views, but don’t plan a beach-focused trip.
- Treks and jeep safaris: some trails and off-road routes close during heavy rain.
- Wildlife safaris: some parks restrict activities in the monsoon.
Sample 5-day monsoon honeymoon
- Day 1: arrive in Kochi and visit Athirappilly waterfalls, then stay nearby or continue to Munnar.
- Day 2: Munnar: tea gardens, waterfalls and a cosy evening in a jacuzzi suite or pool villa.
- Day 3: drive to Kumarakom. Lakeside resort with an Ayurveda spa session for two.
- Day 4: private glass-covered houseboat with candlelight dinner and flower-bed decoration.
- Day 5: Fort Kochi and departure.
Monsoon travel tips
- Pack a good umbrella, a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and sandals or shoes with grip.
- Carry a waterproof pouch for phones and documents.
- Keep a little flexibility in your plans in case of heavy rain alerts.
- Choose resorts with indoor activities, good food and a spa.
- Start drives early and avoid night driving on hill roads.
- Get travel insurance, as with any trip.
Is it safe to travel to Kerala in the monsoon?
Yes, for most of the season. Tourism continues normally through the monsoon. Occasionally, very heavy rain leads to alerts in specific districts. We monitor official alerts and will reroute your trip if needed, for example by spending more time in the backwaters or at an Ayurveda resort instead of the hills.
Who is a monsoon honeymoon best for?
- Couples who marry between May and August.
- Couples who want luxury stays at lower prices.
- Couples who prefer quiet, green and cosy over sunny and busy.
- Couples interested in Ayurveda and wellness.
