Kashmir Tulip Festival: When to Go and How to Plan from Kerala

When is the Kashmir Tulip Festival and how do you plan it from Kerala? Bloom timing, a 6-day spring itinerary, tips and what to pack.

Kashmir Tulip Festival: When to Go and How to Plan from Kerala

Every spring, the slopes above Dal Lake in Srinagar turn into a sea of colour as more than a million tulips bloom at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, often described as the largest tulip garden in Asia. The Tulip Festival is one of the most beautiful times to visit Kashmir, and an increasingly popular trip for couples and families from Kerala.

Here is when to go, what to expect and how to plan a tulip season trip from Kochi.

When is the Kashmir Tulip Festival?

The garden usually opens to visitors in the second half of March, and the bloom lasts around three to four weeks, into April. The exact opening date changes every year depending on the weather, and the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department announces it closer to the season.

  • Late March: the garden opens and early varieties bloom. Fewer crowds.
  • First half of April: usually the peak bloom, with the most colour across the terraces.
  • Mid to late April: later varieties are still in flower, but some beds start fading.

If you want the best chance of seeing the garden at its fullest, plan for the first two weeks of April and keep your dates slightly flexible.

What makes spring in Kashmir special

  • The tulip garden: dozens of tulip varieties in long, colourful rows against the Zabarwan hills, with Dal Lake in the distance.
  • Almond blossoms: in March, the almond orchards of Srinagar burst into pink and white bloom.
  • Mughal gardens: Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi come alive with fresh greenery and flowers.
  • Snow in the mountains: Gulmarg often still has snow in late March and early April, so you can enjoy flowers and snow on the same trip.
  • Comfortable weather: days are pleasant and nights are cool, much easier than the deep winter cold.

Sample 6-day Kashmir spring itinerary from Kerala

  1. Day 1: fly from Kochi to Srinagar via Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. Evening shikara ride on Dal Lake and a night on a houseboat.
  2. Day 2: Tulip Garden in the morning (when the light is softest and crowds are lower), followed by the Mughal gardens.
  3. Day 3: day trip to Sonamarg for glaciers and mountain views.
  4. Day 4: drive to Gulmarg. Gondola ride and snow, depending on conditions.
  5. Day 5: drive to Pahalgam via saffron fields. Visit Betaab Valley and the nearby meadows.
  6. Day 6: return to Srinagar and fly back to Kerala.

Tips for visiting the Tulip Garden

  • Go early: the garden is busiest from late morning, especially on weekends.
  • Buy tickets at the gate or online when available. Entry fees are modest.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the garden is spread over terraced slopes.
  • Don’t pick or step on the flowers: staff are strict about this.
  • Plan photos well: the upper terraces give the best views over the rows of tulips with the lake behind.

Is the Tulip season good for a honeymoon?

Yes, and it is a lovely alternative for couples who marry in March or April. You get flowers, snow-capped mountains, a houseboat stay on Dal Lake and comfortable weather, without the extreme cold of winter. We can add honeymoon touches like room decoration and a candlelight dinner on your houseboat.

Is it good for families?

Very. The pleasant weather makes spring one of the easiest times for older parents and children to enjoy Kashmir. Shorter drives and gentle sightseeing work well for mixed-age groups.

What to pack for Kashmir in spring

  • Layers: a warm jacket, sweaters and thermals for Gulmarg and the evenings.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • A compact umbrella, as spring showers are common.
  • Moisturiser and lip balm for the dry air.

How far ahead should you book?

The tulip season is one of the busiest periods in Kashmir, and good houseboats and hotels fill quickly. We recommend booking at least two to three months ahead, so January or early February for an early April trip. Booking early also helps with flight fares from Kochi.
