Kumarakom vs Alleppey: Which Backwater Is Better for Couples?
Kumarakom or Alleppey for your honeymoon? Compare houseboats, lake resorts and things to do on Kerala's backwaters.
Every Kerala honeymoon includes a night on the backwaters, and the two names you will see most often are Alleppey (Alappuzha) and Kumarakom. They are only about an hour apart, on either side of the same great lake, Vembanad. Yet the experience in each is quite different. Here is how they compare, and which one suits your honeymoon better.
Alleppey: the houseboat capital
Alleppey sits on a vast network of canals, rivers and lagoons. It has the largest fleet of houseboats in Kerala and the longest cruising routes, winding through villages, paddy fields below water level, coconut groves and narrow canals.
- Best for: the classic houseboat experience, with a wide choice of boats and routes.
- Feel: lively and full of everyday village life along the banks.
- Extras: canoe rides through narrow canals, Alleppey Beach and Marari Beach nearby, and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in August.
- Stays: houseboats, lakeside homestays, and beach resorts at Marari.
Kumarakom: quiet luxury on the lake
Kumarakom is a cluster of small islands on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake. It is quieter and greener, and known for its luxury lakeside resorts, many with private pool villas, Ayurveda spas and their own jetties.
- Best for: couples who want a luxurious, peaceful stay by the water.
- Feel: calm, exclusive and slow-paced.
- Extras: the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (best in the winter months), sunset cruises on the open lake and village walks.
- Stays: high-end resorts, heritage villas and premium houseboats.
Alleppey vs Kumarakom side by side
| Alleppey | Kumarakom | |
|---|---|---|
| Houseboat choice | Largest selection | Smaller, more premium selection |
| Cruise scenery | Narrow canals, villages, paddy fields | Open lake views, quieter waters |
| Luxury resorts | Fewer; beach resorts at Marari | Many lakeside luxury resorts |
| Atmosphere | Lively and authentic | Peaceful and exclusive |
| Distance from Kochi | About 1.5 to 2 hours | About 2 hours |
| Best for | The houseboat night | A lake resort stay, before or after the houseboat |
Which is better for a honeymoon houseboat?
For the houseboat night itself, Alleppey offers more variety and more interesting cruising, through canals and villages. Kumarakom houseboats tend to cruise more on the open lake, which is beautiful and calm, especially at sunset.
Either way, the most important choice is not the town but the boat. Book a private houseboat, ideally a premium glass-covered one, with a candlelight dinner and flower-bed decoration on board. Read our guide on private vs shared houseboats.
Which is better for a resort stay?
Kumarakom wins for luxury. If you want a private pool villa by the lake or a spa resort with Ayurveda treatments, Kumarakom has more options. Alleppey’s Marari Beach is a great alternative if you want a beach resort instead.
The best of both
Many of our honeymoon couples do both:
- Option 1: one night on a private houseboat from Alleppey, followed by one night at a Kumarakom lake resort.
- Option 2: one night on a houseboat, followed by one night at Marari Beach, then fly out of Kochi.
This gives you the classic houseboat experience and a relaxed, luxurious final night without long drives. See our 4-day Alleppey, Marari and Kochi package and the 3-day Alleppey package.
Best time to visit the backwaters
- October to March: pleasant weather and calm waters. The best overall season.
- April and May: hot and humid; choose an air-conditioned glass-covered houseboat.
- June to August: monsoon. Lush and romantic, with lower prices; cruising may be restricted on heavy rain alert days.
Things to do in each
In Alleppey: canoe ride through narrow canals, village walks, Alleppey Beach at sunset, Marari Beach, and toddy shop-style Kerala cuisine at local restaurants.
In Kumarakom: early morning birdwatching at the sanctuary, a sunset shikara-style boat ride on the lake, an Ayurveda spa session, and a village tour to see coir-making and toddy tapping.
Our recommendation
Choose Alleppey for your houseboat night and the authentic backwater experience. Choose Kumarakom if you want a luxury lakeside resort. If you have an extra night, do both.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Kumarakom from Alleppey?
About an hour by road, so it is easy to combine both in one trip.
Can we do a day cruise instead of an overnight houseboat?
Yes, day cruises are available in both places. But for a honeymoon, the overnight stay with a candlelight dinner and a quiet night on the water is what makes the experience special.
Which is better in the monsoon?
Both are beautiful and green. Kumarakom’s lake resorts with indoor spas are especially comfortable on rainy days.
