Summer Honeymoon in Kerala: Is April to May a Good Time?

Planning a Kerala honeymoon in April or May? Weather by region, where to stay cool, a 5-day summer itinerary and packing tips.

Summer Honeymoon in Kerala: Is April to May a Good Time?

Many couples marry in April and May, and then wonder whether Kerala is too hot for a honeymoon in summer. The short answer: the coast is hot and humid, but Kerala’s hill stations are at their most pleasant, and with the right plan, a summer honeymoon in Kerala can be wonderful and better value than the winter peak.

Here is what to expect and how to plan an April or May honeymoon in Kerala.

What is the weather like in April and May?

Region Typical daytime temperature What it feels like
Kochi, Alleppey, Kumarakom About 32 to 35°C Hot and humid; evenings are warm
Varkala, Kovalam About 32 to 34°C Hot; sea breeze helps in the evenings
Munnar About 20 to 27°C Pleasant days, cool nights
Vagamon About 20 to 27°C Fresh and breezy
Wayanad About 25 to 30°C Warm days, comfortable evenings
Thekkady About 27 to 31°C Warm but greener and milder than the coast

Pre-monsoon thunderstorms are common in the afternoons and evenings, especially in May. They cool things down and usually pass quickly. The southwest monsoon generally reaches Kerala around the end of May or early June.

Why summer can be a great time for a Kerala honeymoon

  • Hill stations are perfect: Munnar, Vagamon and Wayanad offer cool relief from the heat in the plains, which is why they are popular summer getaways.
  • Better value: outside the school holiday weeks, many resorts offer lower rates than in December and January, making it easier to afford a pool villa or jacuzzi suite.
  • Fewer international tourists: popular spots are quieter than in winter.
  • Mango and jackfruit season: a delicious bonus for food lovers.

How to plan a summer honeymoon in Kerala

1. Spend more nights in the hills

Instead of the usual split, spend two or three nights in Munnar and consider adding Vagamon, with its rolling meadows and pine forest. Both are cool and scenic in summer.

2. Keep the houseboat, but choose the right one

A houseboat night is still a highlight in summer. Choose a premium glass-covered private houseboat with an air-conditioned lounge, so you can enjoy the backwaters in comfort during the day. Read our guide to private vs shared houseboats.

3. Make the beach optional

Varkala and Kovalam are very hot in May. If you love the sea, plan beach time for early mornings and sunsets, and pick a resort with a good pool. Otherwise, skip the beach and add an extra hill night.

4. Plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings

Do outdoor activities before 11 am and after 4 pm, and rest at your resort in the afternoon heat.

5. Watch the school holiday weeks

April and May are school vacation months across India, so hill stations can get busy with families, especially on weekends. Book early for popular resorts.
