Private vs Shared Houseboat in Alleppey: What Couples Should Know
Private or shared houseboat in Alleppey? Compare privacy, meals, categories and price, and see what a honeymoon houseboat day really looks like.
A night on an Alleppey houseboat is the moment most couples picture when they think of a Kerala honeymoon: drifting past coconut groves, dinner on deck, and waking up to a quiet lake. But when you start comparing quotes, you will notice two very different kinds of houseboats on offer, private and shared. The price difference can look tempting. The experience difference is much bigger.
Here is what every couple should know before booking a houseboat in Alleppey or Kumarakom.
What is a private houseboat?
A private houseboat is booked entirely for you. For honeymoon couples, that usually means a one-bedroom houseboat with its own crew: a captain, a cook and a helper. The deck, the dining area and the bedroom are yours alone. The menu is cooked for the two of you, and the crew plans the day around what you want to do.
What is a shared houseboat?
A shared houseboat is a larger boat with several bedrooms, each sold separately to different guests. You get your own room, but the deck, dining area and meals are shared with other travellers. These are cheaper, which is why budget packages often use them. For families or groups of friends travelling together, they can be fine. For a honeymoon, they rarely feel right.
Private vs shared houseboat: side by side
| Private houseboat | Shared houseboat | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is on board | Only the two of you and the crew | Other guests in the other rooms |
| Deck and dining | Yours alone | Shared with strangers |
| Meals | Cooked for you, can be customised | Fixed common menu |
| Candlelight dinner and decoration | Easy to arrange on deck | Usually not possible |
| Route and stops | Some flexibility within the permitted routes | Fixed for everyone |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Honeymoons, anniversaries, couples | Groups and budget travellers |
Standard, premium and glass-covered houseboats
Private houseboats themselves come in categories, and the difference shows mostly in the bedroom, the bathroom and the upper deck:
- Deluxe: clean, comfortable one-bedroom boats with an AC bedroom (usually at night) and a sit-out deck. Good value for couples on a budget.
- Premium: better interiors, larger bedrooms, upper decks and more attentive crews.
- Premium glass-covered: a fully enclosed, air-conditioned glass lounge with wide views of the backwaters. These are the most popular choice for honeymoons because you can enjoy the scenery in comfort even at midday, and the evening setting is beautiful.
Our honeymoon packages use one-bedroom premium glass-covered private houseboats, or similar, as standard.
What a honeymoon houseboat day looks like
- Around noon: you board at Alleppey or Kumarakom and are welcomed with a fresh drink.
- Afternoon: the boat cruises through the backwaters while lunch is served. Kerala fish curry, karimeen (pearl spot) fry, avial and rice are typical, and you can ask for vegetarian or less spicy food.
- Evening: tea and snacks on deck as the boat passes villages, paddy fields and the open lake. Houseboats stop cruising around sunset under local rules and anchor for the night at a quiet spot.
- Night: a candlelight dinner for two, with the bedroom decorated with flowers. On our honeymoon packages, both are included.
- Next morning: breakfast on board and check-out around 9 am, before you continue to the beach or the airport.
Common mistakes couples make when booking a houseboat
- Booking by price alone. A quote that looks ₹5,000 cheaper may be a shared boat or an older deluxe boat. Always ask whether the houseboat is private and what category it is.
- Not asking about AC timings. Many houseboats run the bedroom AC only at night. Glass-covered boats give you a cool space during the day too.
- Expecting to cruise at night. Cruising stops in the evening. The night is spent anchored, which is quiet and peaceful.
- Forgetting the extras. Check whether the candlelight dinner and decoration are included or charged separately.
- Booking too late for peak dates. The best private boats for Christmas, New Year and long weekends sell out months ahead.
Alleppey or Kumarakom?
Alleppey (Alappuzha) has the largest network of canals and the widest choice of houseboats. Kumarakom, on the edge of Vembanad Lake, is quieter and known for its lakeside resorts and bird sanctuary. Both are excellent for a honeymoon houseboat night, and we choose based on the rest of your route and where you are heading next.
Is a private houseboat worth the extra cost?
For a honeymoon, yes. The houseboat is usually the most memorable night of a Kerala trip, and the privacy is what makes it special: a quiet deck, a dinner arranged just for you, and no one else on board. Paying less for a shared boat often means losing exactly the experience you came for.
That is why we include a private houseboat in every honeymoon package. See our 3-day Alleppey package or the luxury backwater and beach package, or browse all Kerala honeymoon packages.
Frequently asked questions
How many nights should we spend on a houseboat?
One night is right for most couples. It gives you the full experience without feeling repetitive. If you love the backwaters, add a night at a lakeside resort in Kumarakom instead of a second houseboat night.
Is a houseboat safe in the monsoon?
Houseboats operate through most of the monsoon. During heavy rain alerts, authorities may restrict cruising, and we will advise you or rearrange your plan if needed.
Can we get vegetarian or Jain food on board?
Yes. On a private houseboat the cook prepares meals for you, so tell us your preferences when you book.
